You betcha—and tender anarchist Doveman (a.k.a. Thomas Bartlett) fries it up real good, recontextualizing the film soundtrack (Kenny Loggins, et al) as a meditation on mortality and loss.

Doveman’s take on Footloose was available for free on his website for about a month before being removed due to a cease-and-desist order from film-studio lawyers. SUICIDE Live 1977-1978 Blast First Petite Limited-edition (3,000 copies) box housing six discs’ worth of rude, crude, audience-taped Suicide that capture Alan Vega and Martin Rev in full provocateur mode. Don’t forget to duck; as the booklet’s liner notes helpfully outline, that’s the sound of a pint glass being hoisted directly toward the stage. Punks, it seems, didn’t take kindly to a guitar-less duo whose singer taunted them and beat the stage with chains. SPACEMEN 3 DJ Tones EP Space Age Together again, Sonic Boom and Jason Pierce—not!

A limited edition of 2,000 copies boasting five rare tracks, including the shoulda-been-released “These Blues” (which Pierce later redid in Spiritualized) that firmly reestablish S3 as the drone/tone kingpins. VARIOUS ARTISTS Do The Pop! Redux Part One Shock/Savage Beat Yet another installment in archivist David Laing’s overview of antipodean punk roots, from Radio Birdman, the Saints and the New Christs to the Scientists, the Lipstick Killers and the Dagoes.

Anybody with even a passing interest in vintage Aussie rock should check out the Do The Pop! It’s a history lesson and an earwax-cleaning session all rolled into one. CHUCK PROPHET Dreaming Waylon’s Dreams Evangeline Doing cover songs is risky; remaking an entire album—here, Waylon Jennings’ Dreaming My Dreams—is borderline lunacy. But Prophet, by revisiting the spirit while not attempting to recreate the specifics, pulls it off. 1,000 copies only, long sold out, but still available as a download. CHEAP TRICK Budokan! Epic/Legacy Now, while you don’t need to repurchase the two discs comprising At Budokan: The Complete Concert (they came out as a regular release several years ago), if you’re a fan of Cheap Trick in its prime, you do need the DVD/CD portion of this four-disc package that contains the April 28, 1978, Budokan concert in all its raw, exhilarating glory.

They want you to want them—or at least to buy ‘em. RODRIGUEZ Cold Fact Light In The Attic Now this is how reissues should be done: pristine remastering, massive, detail- and photo-rich booklet and a sense of revisiting a genuine historical event. In this case, a cult hero from the early ‘70s ripe for rediscovery. Vinyl alert: The LP version comes with a bonus 45.

TRIFFIDS Early Singles Domino So here’s where it all started: five Australian 45s from 1978-83 that predate the Oz popsters’ longplayers, smartly reproduced (sleeves, labels, etc.) and tucked into a collector’s box, limited to 500 copies. Also recommended: Domino’s 2006 reissue of the Triffids’ 1986 masterpiece, Born Sandy Devotional. BRIAN WILSON “Midnight’s Another Day” b/w “That Lucky Old Sun” & “Morning Beat” Capitol Amid all the hoopla surrounding the release of Wilson’s magnificent That Lucky Old Sun album this year, Capitol sneaked out this gold/orange wax, promotional-only goodie. Direct to eBay for some, but straight to the plastic sleeve and wall mount for me. VARIOUS ARTISTS Carolina Funk: First In Funk Jazzman/NowAgain A “collectible” from the standpoint of its contents: 22 slices of rawer-than-sushi funk and soul gems from the Carolinas region, circa 1968-77, plus the usual massive-booklet and detailed liner notes funk fans have come to expect from the Jazzman label. Available now at a lower price. 'Forged Prescriptions' is a collection of alternative mixes, demo versions, and outtakes from Spacemen 3's 'The Perfect Prescription' era. Not only is it a boon to die-hard fans, but it also holds up pretty well on its own. The relatively cohesive first disc is almost an alternate version of 'The Perfect Prescription', while the second disc is more of an odds and sods collection for fans. The alternate mixes tend to feature overdubs and other effects that the band couldn't reproduce live (supposedly the reason why these mixes weren't chosen for the album). Alternative 623 SPACE AGE RECORDINGS CD ORBIT006 2000/06/12 Spacemen 3.

Available now at a lower price. Double CD reissue of one of the finest (and most influential) albums of the 1980's, SPACEMEN 3's classic 'Playing With Fire'. Flange is everywhere, as is echo, full dynamic stereo mixes and more, a feast of sound. When aiming toward a gentler, hushed sound, most notably on Jason Pierce (who went on to form Spiritualized)'s compositions, the incorporation of gospel power filtered through the band's own perspective results in wonders. As for the louder end of things, 'Revolution' is a slow burn blast that just keeps getting more and more obsessive and frenetic as it goes, Sonic Boom calling for a release of energy in a mere five seconds. The bonus disc includes demos and rarities, including covers of the Perfect Disaster's 'Girl on Fire' and the Troggs' 'Anyway That You Want Me' - eventually Spiritualized's first single.

Alternative 125 SPACE AGE RECORDINGS CD ORBIT011 2004/06/22 Spacemen 3. 28 street date.

Limited edition (2000 copies) 5 track mini-album, which features 2 previously unreleased Spacemen 3 tracks, a radically different mix of the classic Spacemen 3 cover of the Red Krayola's 'Transparent Radiation', and appearing for the first time on CD, the ultra rare remix of 'I Love You' (originally only 50 promo white label vinyl copies were ever pressed). Rounding off this mini-album is a studio version of 'Ecstasy Symphony'. Alternative 825 SPACE AGE RECORDINGS CD ORBIT028 2009/12/01 Spacemen 3.

21 street date. New version of SPACEMEN 3's 1987 classic 'The Perfect Prescription', with updated packaging/digipack format. Reduced to a trio (guitarists/keyboardists Pete 'Sonic Boom' Kember, Jason 'Spaceman' Pierce, and bassist Pete Bassman) following the departure of their first album's drummer, Spacemen 3 makes an asset out of the newfound lack of percussion, giving 'The Perfect Prescription' a considerably less rock-oriented sound with much more open space in its varied, subtle arrangements. Highlights include 'Walkin' With Jesus', which is practically the birth of Spiritualized, with its reflective combination of acoustic guitar, two-note keyboard lines, and Pierce's yearning, aching desire.

The intentionally nasty flip to that is the storming charge of 'Things'll Never Be The Same', a call to arms (or injecting something into them) that's as disturbing as it is energetic, the compressed, violent rage of feedback and rhythmic charge a gripping listen. Album opener 'Take Me To The Other Side' is a brash, exultant charge into the joys of a drug trip, a sharp, tight performance. The closer, 'Call The Doctor', meanwhile, is a pretty-but-wounded conclusion, husky singing and a drowsy mood detailing the final collapse.

Alternative 24 FIRE CD SFIRE016CDE 2013/03/12 Spacemen 3. September 2 street date. Limited edition release of the fourth and final Spacemen 3 studio album 'Recurring'. By the time the album was recorded, relations between the band had soured to the extent that the record is essen-tially in two parts; the first seven tracks written and performed by Sonic Boom and the last seven tracks written and performed by Jason Pierce punctuated by the cover version of Mudhoney’s ‘When Tomorrow Hits’ the only track on which both Kember and Pierce appear together.

“For All the Fucked Up Children of This World” was first released as a bootleg record in 1995. The record consists of Spacemen 3's first ever recording session from 1984. The music itself sounds like a primitive version of what the group were to become; the dominating sound of the record is a slow, droning psychedelic blues performed with sparse instrumentation. A drum set is matched with a pair of distorted electric guitars, all of which provide a swirl-ing foundation for Jason Pierce's vocals. The album's liner notes replicated here are actually an early review of the band by Gary Boldie, where he contemplates the city of Rugby and finds it an odd source for this new sound, and he declares Spacemen 3 as the 'all singing, all dancing answer to the problems of a grey 1985.'
